The ARC Digital Bioprocess Development Hub builds upon the Faster, Smarter Pharma and Food Manufacturing (FSPFM) program at The University of Melbourne (2021-2023) funded through the Victorian Higher Education State Investment Fund.
Under this program, the University of Melbourne worked with 5 industry partners to develop an 18-month program to transform food and pharma manufacturing, with new tools and platforms, custom education and a more digitally skilled workforce.
The centre’s translational research program examined process modelling, simulation, optimisation and the best use of process data to position Victoria as a globally competitive, high-value, low-volume advanced manufacturing centre, with flow-on benefits for priority sectors.
Engineers, scientists and computing specialists worked with the pharma and food industries within six integrated research projects to build Australian advanced manufacturing capabilities. These projects employed six new research fellows and 2 research assistants.
Collaboration
A substantial team draws together expertise from The University of Melbourne, University of Technology Sydney and RMIT University, together with partner organisations CSL Innovation, Cytiva (Global Life Sciences Solutions Australia) and Patheon Biologics Australia.
Three other organisations (Yokogawa Insilico Biotechnology, Mass Dynamics and Sartorius) and three leading international universities (University of Tartu, Estonia; Utrecht University, Netherlands; The University of Nottingham, United Kingdom) are also participants of the Hub.
